Hans Schmidt SS-Panzergrenadier - Als 17jähriger Freiwilliger im Endkampf 1944/45 - Buch
The author volunteered for the Waffen SS in 1943 at the age of 16 and, as a young candidate for a leader in the Panzer Grenadier Regiment 2 of the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler", took part in the Ardennes offensive and defensive battles on the Eastern Front in Hungary from autumn 1944 April 1945 before he was captured by the Americans in Austria. He suffered two serious war injuries. But he was already politically “active” as a 7-year-old boy when he took part in the distribution of leaflets in his native Saarland in 1934 on the occasion of the Saar vote. He then experienced the liberation of the Saarland in January 1935 wide awake, participated in the Jungvolk and Hitler Youth and completed a course of the Reich Labor Service on Borkum before he was drafted as a volunteer for the Waffen SS in 1944. In addition to his own often shocking experiences, we experience a comprehensive appreciation of the achievements and sacrifices of the men of the Waffen SS and of the entire German people in this fateful time.
