The patrols of the watch officer Rudi Walther on U 87, U 256 and U 92 1942-1945

This is the story of Lieutenant Rudolf Walther. Born on June 30, 1922 in Dohna, Saxony, he entered on October 1, 1940 as a naval officer candidate in the Kriegsmarine. He had there initially to undergo his basic training, followed by the practical on-board training on the destroyer Z 24 and as Ensign to the sea on U 87. With U 87 he took part in two patrols under Lieutenant Joachim Berger who took him from the North Atlantic to the Newfoundland Bank and Nova Scotia.
Beginning in April 1942, Rudolf Walther began the actual watch officer training courses at the various naval schools, alternating with practical board training. As a surplus watch officer on U 231 commanded, he made with this submarine again all the exercises and maneuvers of the Agru front. Finally, he was commanded as I.Office Officer on U 256, one of the few submarines that had been converted to an anti-aircraft submarine and was under the command of Wilhelm Brauel. On this boat he experienced the hell of the Atlantic Battle of the years 1943 and 1944. Already long ago the German submarines had become a hunter. Above all, the abilities of Wilhelm Brauel, who was awarded the German Cross in Gold, were the ones that repeatedly brought U 256 back to the Brest base in France. With the beginning of the invasion on June 6, 1944 also U 256 was the enemy, but was so damaged by bombing that it had to go back to the base. The crew of U 256 took over U 92 in Brest and Rudolf Walther was again as the 1st officer on board. On U 92 he experienced an enemy journey in the English Channel and the subsequent transfer of the boat to Norway. Back in Germany, Rudolf Walther had to bid farewell to the men with whom he had shared the hell of the North Atlantic for a year and a half. In January 1945 followed a commander training in Gdansk and the commanding as supernumerary commandant student on U 3011, a boat of type XXI, probably the most modern submarine in the world at that time.
