When Alfred Rubbel, born on June 28, 1921 in Tilsit, volunteered for the Wehrmacht at the age of 18 in September 1939, he does not yet suspect the unusual fate of his soldiers. On June 22, 1941 begins for the young soldiers after his basic training and subsequent transfer to the armored rifle with the company Barbarossa the Russian campaign. First as a loader, then as a gunner, he experiences the rapid advance of the Wehrmacht to the east and is wounded in the fighting for Leningrad in September 1941 by shrapnel. Already in January 1942 back in his unit, takes part in the heavy fighting at the Volkhov. A long Panzerraid leads him with the Panzer Regiment 4 to the Caucasus, the end of 1942 is reached. After the retraining on the Panzer VI Tiger, he is commanded to the Tiger Division 503, with which he is now used as a tank commander in Operation Zitadelle, the retreat battles to the Dnieper and the opening of the boiler of Cherkassy at the front line. After officer training in Ohrdruf and Krampnitz, the King Tiger II experienced the hopeless fight against the advancing front of the Red Army in Hungary and Austria. After the surrender and several days in American captivity, he is released in the freedom. Lieutenant of the Reserve Alfred Rubbel can look back on a total of 57 tank firings, 81 days of operation in the tank and 41 months at the front. His personal accounts reflect not only the impressions of the exertions and horrors of the war, but also the everyday life of a tank soldier. This gripping experience report is supplemented by more than 350 pictures, maps and illustrations of original documents.
