Großadmiral Erich Raeder - Mein Leben. 2 Bände: Oberbefehlshaber der deutschen Kriegsmarine 1935 - 1943 - Buch

In the life memoirs of Grand Admiral Dr. h.c. Erich Raeder, first published in a two-volume edition in 1956 and 1957 and now combined into one volume, reflects the history of the German Navy in the first half of the 20th century. Erich Raeder entered the Imperial Navy as a naval cadet in 1894 after graduating from high school. He served as a signal officer on the armored ships "Sachsen", "Baden" and on the large cruiser "Deutschland". After scientific studies at the Naval Academy, he was promoted to Lieutenant Lieutenant in 1905. During the First World War he was used as an admiral staff officer under Admiral von Hipper, at whose side he was in the battles on the Doggerbank and in the Skagerrak. After being promoted to frigate captain in April 1917, he took on the position of "chief of staff at the commander of the reconnaissance forces". Towards the end of the war he was commanding the small cruiser "Cölln" and after the German surrender became a member of the armistice commission and head of the central department of the Reichsmarineamte. Raeder was promoted to Rear Admiral on July 1, 1922 to inspect the Navy's educational system. In autumn 1924 he was appointed commander of the light naval forces of the North Sea and in January 1925, as a vice admiral, he was appointed chief of the naval station of the Baltic Sea. On October 1, 1928, Admiral Raeder took over the position of chief of the naval command, a position that was renamed commander-in-chief of the Navy in 1935. Erich Raeder thus also had the rank of Reich Minister in Nazi Germany. The promotion to General Admiral followed on April 20, 1936, that to Grand Admiral on April 1, 1939. From the experience of the First World War, Raeder drew the maritime strategic decision to favor the construction of a fleet with heavy surface units, whereby the construction of battleships was given the highest priority
