The author, born in 1926, volunteered for the Waffen SS in 1943. He was drafted into Munich-Freimann in August 1943, where he received his basic training. Unit training took place from October 1943 at the Beverloo military training area in Belgium. Well prepared and equipped, Hoffmann experienced his baptism of fire from June 1944 on the Normandy front in the 4th battery of Flak Battalion 12. He and his comrades impressively describe the bitter battles and the constant danger from the far superior Allied air forces, against which the anti-aircraft defense was fighting a hopeless fight. Illustrated with numerous photos, maps and documents, the deployment path of the 12th SS Panzer Division “Hitlerjugend” is traced in the mirror of the memories of former members of the 4th Battery/Flak Battalion 12.
