Born in Klagenfurt in 1924, Herbert Bellschan von Mildenburg joined the Wandervogel during his school days, from which the illegal Carinthian Hitler Youth formed in the 1930s. In the underground, the 10 to 14-year-olds campaigned for Austria's annexation to the German Reich. The later “Führer and Reich Chancellor” paid tribute to the association with a visit. The personal encounter with Adolf Hitler became a formative event for Herbert. In the years that followed, he was instrumental in organizing the development of the Hitler Youth in Klagenfurt and rose to become the leader. At the age of 17 he volunteered for the Waffen-SS and was trained as a mountain infantryman.

From the winter of 1942 he was deployed at the front with the 6th SS Division “North” in Karelia. On skis and in the glow of the northern lights, his fighter squad drove well behind the Russian lines. After two arctic winters, Herbert was assigned to the Junker school and eventually stayed in Bad Tölz as the youngest teaching officer at a Junker school. After the end of the war he escaped from the Hallein concentration camp, began studying in Vienna under a false identity and was arrested by the American secret service. Finally free in 1947, he emigrated. He fished for crayfish in the Atlantic, prospected for ore in the Sahara, prospected for gold in Australia and finally settled as a rancher in Paraguay. 231 pages, hardcover with numerous, partly color illustrations from private ownership, documents
