In the 5th SS division "Wiking" the author earned his first spurs on the Miusfront as a volunteer, received special training on the grenade launcher and took part in the taking of Rostov and in 1942 with a heavy machine gun group of the SS regiment "Nordland" following advance in the Caucasus. From February 1944, the author, who was finally promoted to SS Unterscharführer, went through the hell of defensive battles near Leningrad, on the Narwa, on Lake Peipus, in the Kurland basin and in Pomerania.
