The two-volume wartime history of the 3rd SS Panzer Division "Totenkopf" begins with the installation in autumn 1939. The first test occurred in the western campaign 1940, where the association gained its first experience in the battles for Holland on the outskirts of the Dunkerquessel. In the summer of 1941, the division came to Army Group and pushed through Lithuania to northern Russia. Trapped near Demyansk in the winter of 1941-42, the division withstand large losses until the relief. It was followed by the reorganization in France, from where the troupe was relocated in January 1943 in the southern section of the Eastern Front, where she participated in March in the reconquest of Kharkov.
