The name of this city stands for one of the bloodiest and most fatal battles of the Second World War and for its turnaround. In the last decades the author has devoted himself to researching this topic. In his work to date on the history of doctors, other medical personnel and the role of international aid organizations, especially the Red Cross, he has also been able to collect a larger number of eyewitness reports from Stalingrad over time. These reports of German soldiers of all arms who were involved in the battle for this city are now being made available to a wider public for the first time. They reflect the harshness of the fighting, but also the slowly fading hope of being released from the cauldron. Most of these reports have so far been unpublished or have been published only in a remote location for a small circle. In doing so, Busch has not only rendered outstanding services to the publication of primary sources of a militarily central event of the twentieth century, but also to depict a humanly deeply moving chapter of one of the greatest tragedies of the war.
