Even before the First World War, the Royal Navy developed small boats that were to be brought to the coast by cruisers as service boats. During the war, due to their shallow draft, they should be able to drive over the mine fields off the German coast. The naval units thus contributed to a significant part of the war at sea in coastal waters.
