Heinz Schön survived in January 1945 as an 18-year-old the downfall of the "Wilhelm Gustloff". The torpedoing of the ship off the Pomeranian Baltic Sea coast killed more than 9,000 people. This event shaped his life. He is today considered one of the best connoisseurs of the history of the German Baltic Sea area during the Third Reich and the immediate post-war period. Shortly after the end of the war, he began to collect documents, photos and eyewitness accounts.
