After the "Anschluss" of Austria to Germany in 1938, a new regiment called "Der Führer" was formed through personnel donations from the existing regiments of the SS available troops "Leibstandarte" in Berlin, "Deutschland" in Munich and "Germania" in Hamburg, as well as from volunteers. set up in Vienna, Graz and Klagenfurt. In 1940, during the Western Campaign, it saw its first serious action in the fight for the heavily fortified Grebbe Line in Holland. This was followed by battles in the formation of the SS Division "Reich" in the eastern campaign, including 1941 at Yelnya, at the Battle of Kiev, during the advance on Moscow. This was followed by fighting near Rzhev in 1942. The regiment was involved in the recapture of Kharkov in the spring of 1943, in Operation "Zitadelle" - the Battle of the Kursk Bulge in the summer of 1943 - and in the defensive battles on the Mius. As part of the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich", the "DF" regiment threw itself against the Allied landing troops in Normandy in 1944, retreated to the Reich border and launched a counter-offensive in the Ardennes in December. Relocated to Hungary for the spring offensive in 1945, rearguard action followed until the last major battle for Vienna. The events of the war were recorded objectively and without embellishments by the four commanders and supplemented by members of the regiment. Illustrated with numerous photos, documents and maps, the book represents a first-class source on the military history of the Second World War.
