Major a. D. Erhard Jähnert, born in Panitzsch on 17 August 1917, volunteered to join the newly formed Luftwaffe at the age of 18, where he first trained as a pilot and in 1939 as a Stuka pilot. With his squad, he took part in the campaigns against Poland, France and the Battle of Britain and flew attacks against land and ship targets at Malta with the aim of bombing the island storm ready and prepare for the invasion. In the attack on the aircraft carrier Illustrious he managed a bombing that damaged the ship, but it did not succeed to sink it. After being transferred on February 14, 1941, with the III./ Stuka Squadron 3, Jähnert witnessed the eventful fighting in North Africa, where in July 1941 he also had the opportunity to get to know the most famous fighter pilot of World War II: Hans-Joachim Marseille, the star of Africa. On June 17, 1942, as Oberfeldwebel awarded the German Cross in Gold and promoted to lieutenant in December left Jähnert on April 12 of the following year, the African theater of war and returned with his group back to Germany.
