Born on 19 March 1912 as the second of four sons of a good manager in Westerholt, Adolf Galland was seized by the general flying enthusiasm at a young age. He gained his first experiences in gliding from 1928 on the airfield Borkenberge near Dülmen. In 1932, he managed to prevail against 4,000 other applicants and get hold of one of the coveted apprenticeships at the pilot flying school Braunschweig. In the same year he joined the officially non-existent German Air Force. In 1933 he completed a top secret flight training in Italy. Galland finally made his first war experiences in 1937 when he was deployed with the Legion Condor on General Franco's side in the Spanish Civil War. After he turned his back to the Polish campaign of battle aviation and the fighter aviation, he was first at the Jagdgeschwader 27 in Krefeld and then led the Jagdgeschwader 26 as his commodore, with whom he participated in the Battle of Britain and England. On November 19, 1941, promoted to Major General, he joined three days later succeeding Werner Mölders as a general of fighter pilots. On January 28, 1942, he was awarded as the second soldier of the German Wehrmacht the oak leaves with swords and diamonds to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Where are our hunters?
