Le Soldat Oublie (Französisch) - Taschenbuch
French Version of Guy Sajer!
Guy Sajer was not seventeen when, in July 1942, he donned the Wehrmacht uniform. He is French by his father, German by his mother; he lives in Alsace. Because of his young age, he is not assigned to a fighting unit, but in the crew train. From November, winter falls on the Russian plain; the cold, the snow, the partisans make the progress of the convoys extremely difficult: never will Sajer's unit reach Stalingrad, which she has to supply; the Sixth Army will capitulate before. But Sajer already knows that the war is not a party of pleasure, that to survive in the Russian winter is already a fight. And yet, this first winter, he did not really make war. The real war, that of the combatant on the front line, he discovered when he was versed in the division "Gross Deutschland", elite division, with which, from the summer of 1943, he will find himself engaged in the biggest battles of the Ukrainian front, when the Wehrmacht bends under the Russian offensive. From Kursk to Kharkov, day and night, in the mud, the snow, when the thermometer marks -40 °, under the terrifying pounding of the Russian artillery, facing the waves of assault of an opponent now powerfully armed and who does not care about losses, the men of the "Gross Deutschland", always worn in the most exposed places, always on the front line, fighting at one against twenty, know the hell. The battle of Bielgorod, the passage of the Dnieper (Berezina at the scale of the Second World War), are lived at the level of the private soldier, two of the highest moments of this story of Revelation. Later, when the German front disintegrated, when the immense army fled, in the regular combat will be added the fight against the partisans, wilder and more ruthless. Later still, it is the retreat of the last survivors of the elite division across Romania and the Carpathians to Poland. In the winter of 1944-1945, Sajer and his comrades embarked on the desperate fighting that the Germans engaged in East Prussia to ban the entry of the Vaterland to the Russians. It is still Memel, where the horror reaches its height, and Danzig, in the midst of the exodus of the German populations of the East. Finally, sick, exhausted. Sajer will be captured by the British in Hanover ...
