This is the story of U 997, a type VII-C German submarine and its crew. Commissioned by First Lieutenant Hans Lehmann on 23 September 1943, after the obligatory training trips in the Baltic Sea for commander and crew began the harsh everyday life of a submarine in use in the Arctic Ocean. In the war years of 1944 and 1945, Hans Lehmann led the boat and its crew on seven dangerous enemy voyages against the expelled from northern Scotland and towards Kolbucht and Murmansk allied convoys.
