U 997 - Geleitzugschlachten im Eismeer - Mit Ritterkreuzträger Hans Lehmann auf Feindfahrt vor Murmansk

This is the story of U 997, a type VII-C German submarine and its crew. Commissioned by First Lieutenant Hans Lehmann on 23 September 1943, after the obligatory training trips in the Baltic Sea for commander and crew began the harsh everyday life of a submarine in use in the Arctic Ocean. In the war years of 1944 and 1945, Hans Lehmann led the boat and its crew on seven dangerous enemy voyages against the expelled from northern Scotland and towards Kolbucht and Murmansk allied convoys. In addition to the constant danger of being discovered from the air and attacked or captured by submarine hunters and being pursued with depth charges, the commander and his crew had to deal with the adversities of the weather in the Arctic Ocean in the summer the midnight sun without protective darkness, in winter endless polar nights, the rough sea, ice and cold. It is only thanks to the crew's nautical skills and skillful operational leadership by the commander and his officers that despite the far superior British and Soviet convoy security and countless U-hunting groups hunting down German submarines, U 997 always did could return to their own bases again. Despite all these adversities, the achievements of U 997 were recognized by the awarding of the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross on 7 May 1945 to commander Hans Lehmann. This book about U 997 convinces not only through the almost complete search of historical data and facts, but also offers tension and drama from beginning to end. It describes the life, fight and death of German U-boat drivers and thus a piece of sea war history in the Arctic Ocean, which must not be forgotten. More than 120 of them, many previously unpublished photographs and reports and CVs of former officers and men of U 997 convey an impressive picture of the reality of hard submarine everyday life.
