"In action over Europe" is a contemporary witness report of a man who has witnessed an important chapter of German air war history first hand.

Günther Scholz, born in 1911, joined the Navy in early 1934 and began an officer career. As a lieutenant and fighter pilot, he then experienced the buildup of the German Air Force.

In 1938 he flew alongside Adolf Galland and Werner Mölders as a member of the "Legion Condor" in the Spanish Civil War and gained his first combat experience.

At the beginning of World War II Scholz was a lieutenant and squadron commander in JG 54. He experienced with his squadron the Polish and Western campaign, the Battle of Britain, the Yugoslav campaign, and the war against Russia.

In 1942 Scholz came as a group commander in JG 5 to the Arctic front. In 1943 he took over the leadership of the squadron, which was able to achieve great success under the most difficult climatic conditions north of the Arctic Circle. The war ended Günther Scholz as a lieutenant colonel and fighter pilot Norway.

In 2014 Günther Scholz is one of the last living members of the "Legion Condor". He is the last surviving former squadron commander of the Luftwaffe and the highest ranking surviving former Wehrmacht officer. He is thus one of the last great personalities who can even report on their experience. That's what makes the book so interesting.
