Die Panzer-Divisionen der Waffen-SS - Buch
Leibstandarte, Das Reich, Totenkopf, Viking, Hohenstaufen and much more. 320 p., many b/w. Fig., born in large format The Panzer Divisions are the best known and most powerful units of the Waffen SS. They took part in virtually every major combat operation of World War II. Their names are associated with the battles of Kharkov and Kursk in 1943, Cherkasy, Normandy and Ardennes in 1944, and Pomerania and Hungary in 1945. Having emerged from pure infantry formations, as the war progressed they were reorganized first into Panzergrenadier and then into Panzer divisions. Repeatedly weakened by assignments to newly formed SS formations, they were nevertheless characterized by a high level of combat effectiveness and morale, even though in the final years of the war losses were no longer replaced by volunteers but by donations from other parts of the Wehrmacht. The author traces this development, names locations, armament, equipment and combat strengths. He describes the operative events with reference to reports from contemporary witnesses, unknown photographs and many other documents. The result is a work that provides an objective overview of these Waffen-SS units.
