The history of the German general staff.
In his book "The Warrior Genius", the renowned military historian manages to summarize the history of one of the most successful and most copied phenomena in military history: the Prussian-German General Staff.

Because of Napoleon's victories over his opponents in Europe, Prussia was forced out of its defeat to begin a political and military reform. These reforms soon turned out to be the basis for the impressive rise of Prussia in the 19th century. This affected not only his position in science and business, but also his military organization. His general staff became an admired and feared role model - even beyond Europe. The author examines not only the history of the Prussian-German general staff until its dissolution at the end of the Second World War, but also the reasons for its longstanding military superiority.

The U.S. Department of Defense commissioned a study of Dupuy's work by well-known military historian Martin van Creveld. Van Creveld also came to a similar conclusion to Dupuy - the German armies were also superior to the US army - and published his findings in his standard work "Kampfkraft", which has already been published. This fundamental work, which is now available in German for the first time, has become a standard work in military history in the United States, and has been published in several editions to date. Dupuy creates a large panorama of Prussian-German military history. It shows how Prussia and later Germany, from a total defeat against Napoleon in the spirit of the Prussian reformers Clausewitz, Gneisenau and Scharnhorst, built up the army and how the general staff became one of the most powerful military organizations in the world. And he shows the structures that led to the work of these reformers lasting over a century and a half and continuing seamlessly to the German Wehrmacht. The term "The warlike genius" that gives the book its title comes from the Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz and does not express anything else than the current term "military leader".
