Author Rudolf Lehmann served as Obersturmbannführer and in the war on the Eastern Front in the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler". In this position, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold on 1 November 1943 and the Knight's Cross on 23 February 1944. As of the end of January 1945, Lehmann held the rank of SS-Waffen SS SSB. At the end of the war Lehmann commanded the 2.SS Panzer Division "Das Reich"
